Thermal storage heating unit
electric thermal storage heating
Stay cozy without the cost! Steffes electric thermal storage (ETS) stand-alone heating systems provide a clean, consistent source of heat for individual rooms or entire homes.
More

An electric thermal storage heater is a stand-alone, off-peak heating system that eliminates the need for a backup fossil-fuel heating system when sized properly. The system contains electric heating elements that lie within specially-designed, high-density ceramic bricks.

These bricks are capable of storing vast amounts of heat for extended periods of time. The stored heat is automatically regulated in relation to outdoor temperature and the heating requirements of the user. When the room thermostat calls for heat, heat is extracted from the unit’s storage core and is distributed evenly in the home.

Electric thermal storage heaters draw electricity during off-peak hours when it is cheaper. Heat is stored in specially-designed bricks to provide comfort 24 hours a day.

Benefits

  • A safe, clean heating alternative for any home or building that requires no gas or propane backup.
  • Virtually a maintenance-free system because it requires no tank-filling or annual tune-up.
  • Allows you to receive the off-peak heating rate, which is about half of the standard electric rate.
  • Can be installed as a forced-air furnace or a hydronic underfloor heating system. Individual room units are also available.

Portable generator
standby generators
Many of Roseau Electric's members have generators to supply their emergency electrical needs. It's important to use them safely and maintain them properly to get the maximum benefit from your investment.
More

Safety

A generator installation must have an approved double-throw transfer switch. The National Electric Code and your cooperative require this switch for two very good reasons.

First, it does not allow electricity from the generator to flow backward into the power lines. Without a double-throw disconnect switch, 240 volts of electricity may feed back to your transformer, which steps it up to 7,200 volts. As a result, a line crew working on the line or someone else who assumes the line is dead would be put in danger. Second, the double-throw switch protects your generator from damage when the electricity is restored.

Maintenance

Many of Roseau Electric Cooperative's rural customers already have a pole-top or grade level double throw disconnect for their standby generator systems. Some preventative maintenance is required to ensure your disconnect will work when needed.

Have the remote switch on top of your pole checked periodically. This switch should be exercised and lubricated to ensure it is working properly. Also check the box for holes that would allow dirt to infiltrate the switch mechanism. All holes (except drainage holes) should be sealed with a good quality silicone caulk.

Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations on how to use your generator. If you have questions about purchasing or connecting a standby generator, please contact your electrician or call us at 218-463-1543 or 888-847-8840. It will be well worth your time to avoid costly and hazardous mistakes.
